Mallory spent the rest of class furiously taking notes, barely stopping to look around the room. Professor MacKenna dove right into the lesson without even introducing her to the rest of the class, for which she was grateful. Then again, it was an advanced level strategy course full of students eighteen and older, so there wasn't any need to point out that she was new.

Everyone knew. They all noticed her, which meant she needed to focus on the human elements on her web this time instead of the easier animals and insects. It was a strategy class, after all, and she would need the practice keeping track of people if she wanted to have a fighting chance in the mock battles ahead.

Mallory kept her head low even when she felt little dings on her web that indicated she had the other students' momentary attention. Luckily, they usually went back to taking notes fairly quickly, but a few lingered, setting her nerves on edge. One in particular kept coming back to her from three seats behind hers, lighting up on her web so many times she began to get a headache from forcing herself to maintain it.

Is everyone in this academy a low-key creep? she wondered, distracted from Professor MacKenna's lecture again. She ground her teeth as she had to keep herself from turning around to see who it was that was so interested in the back of her head, but doing so would definitely give her away. She wanted to stay under the radar as much as possible.

The bell finally rang after an hour and fifteen minutes, indicating that the students were free to go. Books banged shut as students put away their things and got to their feet, looking forward to escaping the confines of the classroom. All but one girl.

Well, two, if she was being technical about it. Mallory stayed in her seat, putting her things away slowly. Her head ached with the effort of using her powers in such an unfamiliar way for so long, and she groped in her bag for her ibuprofen.

"Hey."

Mallory didn't look up, refusing to answer to such a non-specific greeting. She's probably talking to someone else.

"Hey. New girl. My name is Janae Wright. What's yours?"

Well, there's no denying it now. She's definitely talking to me. Mallory looked up to see a tall, dark-skinned young woman with one side of her head shaved and long, twists of hair falling over the other side. She was holding her hand out to be shaken. Mal took it, then stiffened as warmth flowed up her arm from the contact, going straight to her head and easing the tension better than any painkiller ever had.

It was different than the way Nico's magic felt, electric and heady, hot with tantalizing promises, but it was powerful just the same.

"Wow, thanks. My name is Mallory. How'd you do that?"

"How do you do whatever it is that you do?"

Good point. Mal shrugged, blushing. "I have no idea."

"Same. I'm guessing you haven't been around many other magical people before?"

Not any that actually used their powers.
